EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken in 1913, a group of determined copper miners from Calumet, Michigan, USA, gather outside Dunn's Bar, a popular watering hole among workers. The miners, who were members of the Western Federation of Miners (WFM), were engaged in a bitter industrial dispute with their employers over concerns of being displaced by one-man drills and the subsequent loss of jobs or lower wages. The miners' placards clearly state their demands for "higher wages and better working conditions," as they rally in support of their cause. The sign on the left reads, "Something just as good Miners ask for bread, Jim [MacNaughton, C&H General Manager] offers lead," highlighting the stark contrast between the miners' basic needs and the company's perceived indifference. The middle sign reads, "One man machine Our Agitator," reflecting the miners' view of the one-man drills as a threat to their livelihoods. The photograph captures the intensity and solidarity of the miners during this pivotal moment in labor history. The image is a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by workers in the early 20th century to secure fair wages and safe working conditions. The Miners Bulletin, visible in the hands of some of the miners, underscores the importance of unionization and collective action in advocating for workers' rights. This photograph, taken in Calumet, Michigan, in 1913, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the labor movement in the United States and serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the working class.
