EDITORS COMMENTS
Edaphosaurus (now identified as Naosaurus), a prominent reptile from the Permian period, is depicted in this lithograph. Hailing from the rich fossil deposits of Texas, this ancient creature once roamed the Earth over 270 million years ago. Naosaurus, meaning "ship lizard," was a herbivorous reptile with a distinctively long, flat snout and a series of bony plates along its back. Measuring up to 10 feet in length, this prehistoric beast was a formidable presence in its time. The illustration in this print is based on the work of J. Smit, as featured in H.N. Hutchinson's "Extinct Monsters and Creatures of Other Days," published by Chapman and Hall in London in 1894. The book, a testament to the burgeoning field of paleontology, showcased the latest discoveries and knowledge of prehistoric life. Charles R. Knight's masterful illustrations, including this one of Naosaurus, brought these extinct creatures to life for a fascinated public. Knight's attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of these ancient beings helped fuel the public's imagination and fueled a growing interest in the study of Earth's prehistoric past. Today, Naosaurus serves as a reminder of the rich history hidden within the Earth's strata, waiting to be discovered and understood. The study of paleontology continues to reveal new insights into the lives of these ancient creatures, shedding light on the incredible journey of life on Earth.
