Essaouira, Morocco - Childrens Holiday - Wheel Rides

Essaouira - a city in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz, on the Atlantic coast (also known by its Portuguese name of Mogador or Mogadore). The Berber name means The Wall, a reference to the fortress walls that originally enclosed the city and which can clearly been seen in this fascinating postcard depicting a Childrens Holiday in the city. Crowds gather to ride on traditional pin wheel rides, popular in this part of North West Africa and unchanged from forms of entertainment ride seen around the world from the late medieval period onwards and still popular (in larger form!) to this day. Date: circa 1901

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, hailing from the early 1900s, transports us back in time to Essaouira, Morocco, a city rich in history and culture. Known as Mogador or Mogadore in Portuguese, Essaouira's Berber name translates to 'The Wall,' a fitting moniker given to the fortress walls that once encircled this enchanting city on the Atlantic coast of the Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz economic region in western Morocco. In this charming scene, we witness a Children's Holiday unfolding, as local children revel in the simple joys of life. The crowd gathers around a traditional pin wheel ride, a popular form of amusement that has remained unchanged since the late medieval period. The pinwheel, a staple of North African and Western African fairs, is still a beloved attraction to this day, albeit in larger forms. The children's laughter and excitement are palpable as they take turns riding the whimsical ride, their faces filled with pure joy. The vibrant colors of the scene are further accentuated by the intricate, traditional Moroccan architecture in the background, with the fortress walls standing proudly as a reminder of Essaouira's rich history. This photograph offers a glimpse into a simpler time, where the simple pleasures of life brought people together, and where the magic of childhood remained unspoiled. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Essaouira and the timeless allure of this enchanting city.
