EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Evelyn Waugh, the renowned English author, is seen beaming with joy alongside his newlywed wife, Evelyn Gardner, following their wedding ceremony on September 16, 1928. The image, taken by the esteemed Illustrated London News Ltd, captures the couple's radiant happiness and the beginning of their lifelong journey together. Evelyn Waugh, born in 1903, was a celebrated writer known for his satirical novels, including "Decline and Fall" and "Scoop." His literary prowess had already earned him a significant following, but it was his personal life that would become the stuff of legend. Evelyn Gardner, a striking and enigmatic woman, had first captured Waugh's attention when she was just 17 years old. Despite their age difference and the disapproval of her family, the two began a passionate affair that lasted for several years. Eventually, they decided to marry, much to the surprise of the literary world. Their wedding day was a grand affair, with numerous notables in attendance, including the poet W.H. Auden and the writer and critic, Harold Acton. The newlyweds looked every inch the happy couple, with Waugh's mischievous grin and Gardner's radiant smile. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the passionate and often tumultuous relationship between Evelyn Waugh and Evelyn Gardner, a union that would inspire much of his later work. Their marriage, which lasted until 1930, would be marked by infidelities, heartbreak, and ultimately, separation. But for this moment in time, they were simply a newlywed couple, basking in the joy of their newfound union.
