EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the German Cafe Flossel, a historic establishment located on the bustling Zhongshan Road in Qingdao, China. Qingdao, also known as Tsingtao, is a port city in the Shandong Province of Eastern China. In 1898, China ceded the Kiautschou Bay area to Germany, leading to the establishment of the German protectorate, which lasted until 1914 when the city was captured by the Japanese. This photograph, estimated to date from the 1930s, provides a glimpse into the city's intriguing history. The German Cafe Flossel, with its distinctive architectural features, stands proudly on the left side of the image. The cafe, a remnant of the German occupation, exudes an air of elegance and sophistication. However, the presence of a Chinese military policeman on the right hand side of the photograph serves as a reminder that this was no longer German territory. The policeman's uniform and the fact that the photograph was taken after 1922, when the Japanese had taken control of the city, add an intriguing layer of context to the image. The Zhongshan Road, a famous shopping street, is filled with activity in the background. The hustle and bustle of the crowd, the vendors selling their wares, and the various signs and advertisements all contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of the scene. This photograph is a fascinating snapshot of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Qingdao and the complex political dynamics of the early 20th century.
