This evocative 18th century print captures the enchanting allure of Scarborough Spa, once the domain of the self-styled Governor, Dicky Dickinson. Dickinson, a man of considerable means, built a grand spa house on the site in 1700, drawn to the area by the belief in the healing properties of the natural springs. The original buildings and springs, however, were tragically buried by a devastating landslide in 1737. The image depicts Dickinson, dressed in the finery of the era, standing before the ruins of his once-grand spa, holding a key in hand. A monkey perched on his shoulder, a common companion of the wealthy during this period, adds a whimsical touch to the scene. In the background, the North Sea crashes against the cliffs, providing a dramatic backdrop to the serene setting. Despite the setback, Dickinson's legacy lived on.
