EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases four intricately detailed bird species: the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor), Black-throated Ant-shrike (Frederica naevigaris, now known as Lanius collaris frederici), Purple-throated Euphonia (Euphonia chlorotica), and Green-winged Saltator (Saltator similis). The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Great Grey Shrike, depicted on the left, is a large and aggressive bird of prey with a distinctive hooked beak and grey plumage. The Black-throated Ant-shrike, illustrated in the middle, is a small, slender bird with a black throat and wings, and a distinctive white eye-ring. The Purple-throated Euphonia, shown on the right, is a vibrant, colorful bird with a purple throat, yellow belly, and black wings. The Green-winged Saltator, at the bottom, is a medium-sized bird with a green wing patch, a yellow belly, and a black mask around its eyes. The intricacy and detail of this illustration are a testament to the skill and artistry of Pretre and the team of engravers, Guyard, and Turpin, who brought this work to life. The use of the stipple engraving technique, which involves the application of small dots of ink to create shading and texture, adds to the depth and realism of the image. This beautiful work of art not only showcases the natural beauty of these bird species but also serves as a historical record of their appearance during the early 19th century.
