EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken circa 1900, we find ourselves transported back in time to the vibrant and culturally rich region of Cho Lon, in southern Vietnam, just west of Ho Chi Minh City. The scene unfolds as a group of elegant Chinese women, dressed in traditional Hanfu attire, gather together for a studio portrait. Among them, the Guangxu Emperor of China, Kuang-hsu (r. 1875-1908), sits regally on a throne, his imperial robes adorned with intricate gold and silk embroidery. During the late 19th century, Cho Lon, also known as the "Chinese Quarter," was a bustling hub of Chinese immigrants who had fled political instability and economic hardships in their homeland. This thriving community, which numbered around 150,000, was a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the Chinese diaspora. The Guangxu Emperor's visit to Cho Lon was a significant event, as it marked the first time a Chinese emperor had traveled outside of China's borders. His journey was intended to strengthen diplomatic relations with the French colonial authorities, who had recently taken control of Indochina, including southern Vietnam. The imperial entourage arrived in Saigon in 1887, and the emperor spent several days in Cho Lon, where he was greeted with great fanfare by the Chinese community. This photograph captures a moment of cultural exchange and diplomacy, as the Guangxu Emperor is surrounded by the elegant women of Cho Lon, their beauty and grace a testament to the rich cultural heritage that thrived in this vibrant community. The image serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when the world was a smaller place, and the exchange of ideas and traditions shaped the course of history.
