EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Isabella, Duchess of Grafton (nee Bennett) is depicted in all her regal splendor. Born in 1667, she was the daughter of Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington, and his wife, Frances Teresa Stuart. Isabella's marriage to Henry, the first Duke of Grafton, was a politically advantageous one, as the Duke was a close confidant of King Charles II. The union took place in 1684, when Isabella was just 17 years old. The portrait showcases Isabella's refined beauty and sophistication. She is dressed in the latest fashion of the day, with an intricately embroidered gown and a lace-trimmed mantilla. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, adorned with pearls and diamonds. The Duchess' piercing blue eyes gaze out at the viewer with a confident and regal expression. Isabella's life was not without tragedy. She lost her first husband, the Duke of Grafton, in 1691, and later married the Duke of Marlborough in 1698. However, this marriage was short-lived, as the Duke passed away in 1702. Isabella's third marriage, to the Duke of Somerset, also ended in tragedy when he died in 1716. Despite these losses, Isabella continued to serve as a patron of the arts and a prominent figure in English society. She was known for her generosity and her support of charitable causes. Isabella, Duchess of Grafton, passed away in 1723, leaving behind a legacy as a gracious and influential woman of the Restoration era. This portrait is a testament to the beauty and elegance of the English aristocracy during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It offers a glimpse into the world of the wealthy and powerful, and the role that women played in shaping the cultural and social landscape of the time.
