In this evocative reproduction of a painting by Frank O. Salisbury, we honor the memory of John Jack Travers Cornwell, a young and brave sailor who posthumously received the Victoria Cross for his extraordinary acts of courage during the Battle of Jutland in the First World War. Born in 1900, Cornwell served aboard HMS Chester, a British cruiser, when it came under relentless fire from four German cruisers on May 31, 1916. Despite the intense danger, Cornwell displayed unwavering bravery. He manned a Lewis gun, single-handedly firing at the enemy ships while encouraging his comrades to continue their efforts. When ammunition ran low, he bravely ventured into the open deck to replenish it, exposing himself to enemy fire. Cornwell's actions were instrumental in repelling the German attack, allowing HMS Chester to escape and continue the battle. Tragically, he was struck by a shell during the engagement and succumbed to his injuries. His heroism did not go unnoticed, and he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the British military. The Battle of Jutland, fought on May 31 and June 1, 1916, was the largest naval battle of the First World War. It took place in the North Sea between the British Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet. The battle ended inconclusively, but it marked a turning point in the war, as the British were able to prevent a major German offensive in the North Sea.
