EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph, titled "Geology and Paleontology" from the Natural History section of Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's work, showcases an intriguing landscape of the Jurassic period in Europe. The illustration, published in Munich by Dr. Fr. Rolles in 1886, offers a vivid depiction of the diverse fauna that inhabited the continent during this epoch. In the foreground, we find a serene body of water teeming with life. Ichthyosaurus, the "fish lizard," glides gracefully through the waves, its streamlined body perfectly adapted for aquatic life. Plesiosaurus, with its elongated neck, surveys the scene from the water's edge. On land, the Jurassic landscape is dominated by the towering silhouettes of dinosaurs. Teleosaurus, a herbivorous sauropod, grazes peacefully, while Pterodactylus, an early pterosaur, takes flight above. Rhamphorhynchus, another flying reptile, can be seen perched on a rocky outcrop. Among the trees, Avian-like creatures such as Archaeopteryx and various bird species roost, displaying their feathered plumage. The landscape is further adorned with various fish, including Lepidotus and Cidarites coronatus, as well as ammonites and belemnoids. The background of the print reveals a rich mineralogical landscape, with minerals such as gryphaea arcuata, pentacrinus, and ammonites, along with various fossilized plants like Zamites, Pterophyllum, Araucaria, and Pandanus. This illustration offers a glimpse into the rich biosphere of the Jurassic period, a time when Europe was home to a myriad of fascinating creatures and landscapes.
