EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the grand launch of HIJMS (His Imperial Japanese Majesty's Ship) Kongo, the first battleship of the Kongo Class and the last Japanese capital battleship built outside of Japan. The launch took place on May 18, 1912, at Vickers Naval Construction Works in Barrow-in-Furness, England. Madame Koike, wife of the Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, gracefully breaks a bottle of champagne against the ship's bow as onlookers cheer and applaud. The Kongo-class battleship was a significant acquisition for the Imperial Japanese Navy, and its construction marked a new era in naval warfare. The ship was equipped with advanced features, including a main armament of twelve 45-caliber guns and a top speed of 21 knots. Unfortunately, the Kongo's storied career came to an end on November 21, 1944, when it was torpedoed and sunk by the USS Sealion in the Pacific during World War II. Despite this tragic end, the launch of HIJMS Kongo remains an important chapter in maritime history. This photograph is a testament to the international cooperation and technological advancements that shaped the naval landscape of the early 20th century. It serves as a reminder of the complex and intricate relationships between nations, as well as the enduring power and influence of naval power in world affairs.
