EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, showcases the historic MFB Shooters Hill fire station located in Shooters Hill Road, SE London. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) building, a Victorian architectural marvel, was constructed by the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1879. The station, which served the Shooters Hill area, was one of the peripheral stations of the MFB, bordering onto Kent and Bexley rural district. The image portrays the fire station in its prime, with its red brick facade, tall chimney, and distinctive arched windows. Fire engines and horses are visible in the foreground, ready for action. The station's grounds are adorned with trees and greenery, adding to the picturesque setting. The MFB Shooters Hill station played a crucial role in protecting the community from fires during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, with the passage of time, advancements in firefighting technology and the changing needs of the community led to the construction of a new fire station in Eaglesfield Road in 1912. The old station in Shooters Hill Road closed its doors, marking the end of an era in London's firefighting history. This photograph is a testament to the rich heritage of the London Fire Brigade and the vital role that fire stations, like the MFB Shooters Hill station, have played in protecting the city and its people.
