EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir George Henry Lewis, 1st Baronet (1833-1911), an astute English lawyer of Jewish extraction, is depicted in this striking photograph taken in 1892. Born into a prominent Jewish family, Lewis overcame societal prejudices to build a successful legal career. His intelligence, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice earned him the respect of his peers and the admiration of his clients. Lewis was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1858 and quickly made a name for himself as a formidable advocate. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1881, a title that recognized his exceptional skill and expertise in the legal profession. In 1876, he was created a Baronet, a title of nobility, in recognition of his services to the law and to the community. Despite his professional achievements, Lewis faced discrimination due to his Jewish faith. However, he refused to let it deter him from pursuing his passion for justice. He was a founding member of the Jewish Board of Deputies, an organization that represented the interests of the Jewish community in England. He also served as a member of the London County Council, where he advocated for the rights of the less fortunate and worked to improve living conditions in the city. This photograph captures Sir George Henry Lewis in the prime of his career, with an air of confidence and determination that reflects his unwavering commitment to his profession and to the pursuit of justice. His legacy as a trailblazing lawyer who defied societal prejudices continues to inspire generations of lawyers and advocates for social justice.
