EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the tense moment in French history when King Louis XVIII (1755-1824) learned that his nemesis, Napoleon Bonaparte, had escaped Elba and was making his way back to Paris. Louis XVIII had only recently returned to the throne in 1814, after being exiled during the Napoleonic Wars. He had ruled for just a few short months, attempting to bring stability and peace to a war-torn country. The date was March 19 or 20, 1815, and the news came as a shock to the king and his court. In the photograph, Louis XVIII can be seen in deep contemplation, his expression grave as he receives the disturbing news. The Tuileries Palace, his royal residence, looms in the background, a symbol of the monarchy and its power. Napoleon's return marked the beginning of the Hundred Days, a brief period of time during which the former emperor regained power and defeated the Allied forces at the Battle of Waterloo. Louis XVIII was forced to flee once again, this time to England. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the tumultuous political landscape of 19th century Europe and the constant struggle for power and control. It also highlights the precarious nature of monarchies and the challenges they faced in maintaining their authority in the face of popular uprisings and military coups.
