EDITORS COMMENTS
On ne passe pas! (They shall not pass!) - This powerful magazine cover from 1940 encapsulates the unwavering faith and determination of the French people in the defense of their western borders during World War II. The Maginot Line, a series of fortifications built along the French-German border after World War I, was designed to prevent a repeat of the devastating invasion that had occurred just a few short decades earlier. As the shadow of war loomed once again, the French people clung to the belief that their fortified line would hold strong against the German onslaught. The image on this cover, with its bold, defiant text and the ominous, looming clouds on the horizon, conveys a sense of resilience and hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. The Maginot Line, named after French Minister of War André Maginot, was a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the time. Constructed between 1926 and 1935, the line consisted of a series of fortified positions, underground bunkers, and artillery emplacements, all designed to protect the French border. However, despite the best efforts of the French military, the Maginot Line was ultimately bypassed during the German Blitzkrieg campaign in May 1940. The German forces, using new tactics and technologies, managed to outflank the fortifications and invade France through the Ardennes Forest, a region that was considered impassable due to its dense woods and rough terrain. Despite the eventual failure of the Maginot Line, this magazine cover remains a poignant reminder of the faith and courage of the French people during a time of great uncertainty and fear. The image serves as a testament to the enduring power of human spirit and determination in the face of adversity.
