EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting black and white portrait captures the youthful elegance and beauty of Miss Honor Dorothy Leigh, the only daughter of Mr. John Blundell Leigh of Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire, and granddaughter of the Marquess of Abergavenny. The photograph was taken by the renowned British portrait photographer Madame Yevonde in 1915, during a time of great change and upheaval in the world. At the time of this portrait, Honor was engaged to Lieutenant Gerard Sturt of the Coldstream Guards, the eldest son and heir of Lord Allington. The joy and excitement of her engagement were reflected in the pages of The Tatler, a leading society magazine of the era. Regrettably, Gerard's life was cut tragically short when he was killed in action in 1918, during the First World War. Honor's engagement to Gerard was not to be the only marriage in her life. In 1921, she married Major General Merton Beckwith-Smith, a decorated military officer who had also served in the war. This portrait offers a glimpse into the lives of the upper classes during a time of great historical significance. The elegance and refinement of the subjects, the skill of the photographer, and the historical context in which the image was created make it a valuable and intriguing piece of social history.
