EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch of the Monument in Swithland Park, Leicestershire, was created by the Reverend Baden Powell in 1859. The monument, which dates back to around 1500, is an old lantern cross that was once located in the nearby village of Mountsorrel. In 1793, it was relocated to Swithland Park by Sir John Danvers, the owner of Swithland Hall at the time. Sir John Danvers was a prominent figure in the association between the village and the Powell family. Reverend Baden Powell, father of the renowned founder of the Scout Movement, Robert Baden-Powell, spent much of his childhood in Swithland and developed a deep connection to the area. This connection is reflected in his intricate and detailed sketch of the monument, which captures the circular, Victorian-era design of the cross with its ornate steps and lantern-like top. The cross, which stands proudly in the park, is a testament to the rich history of the region and the enduring connection between the Powell family and the community of Swithland. The sketch, created using ink, provides a glimpse into the past and offers a glimpse into the mind of the Reverend Baden Powell as he captured the essence of this historic monument in the heart of the English countryside.
