EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the 1910s, showcases the Mingun Bell in its historic location in Mingun, Myanmar (then known as Burma). The Mingun Bell, a colossal bronze bell, is one of the most famous attractions in Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar. The bell, weighing an estimated 90 tons, was cast in 1797 during the reign of King Bodawpaya. The image reveals the bell before it was re-hung in 1896, following earthquake damage that caused it to fall from its support. The bell's massive size and weight required a complex system of ropes and pulleys to move it into position. However, the earthquake disrupted the support system, leading to the bell's fall and subsequent damage. The photograph also highlights the intriguing grafitti covering the bell. These scribbles and scrawls were added by enthusiastic visitors, likely European tourists, who left their names and messages on the bell as a testament to their journey. The grafitti adds an intriguing layer to the history of the Mingun Bell, reflecting the curiosity and fascination it has inspired over the centuries. The Mingun Bell remains a significant cultural and historical landmark in Myanmar, drawing visitors from around the world who are captivated by its size, history, and the unique stories it holds. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the bell in a moment of history, before it was restored and re-hung for future generations to marvel at.
