EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Boleyn, the enigmatic and influential second wife of King Henry VIII of England, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving. The image captures Anne as she appeared during her time in France, prior to her marriage to Henry in 1533. Anne wears a fashionable attire of the era, including a gable hood chaperon with hanging tail, a low-cut bodice adorned with intricate gold embroidery, a velvet surtout trimmed with ermine, and a gold embroidered petticoat. Her neck is adorned with a pearl necklace, and she holds a rosary in one hand and wears a belt with a large buckle in the other. The meticulous detail in the engraving, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres, Paris, 1827, showcases Anne's regal and sophisticated appearance. Anne Boleyn is known for her role in the English Reformation, as she was the catalyst for the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Church of England. Her tragic end, however, came in 1536 when she was accused of treason and beheaded on orders from her husband, King Henry VIII.
