EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1847, depicts Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary, resplendently dressed in the regal attire of a hussar officer. The Archduke, who served as the military governor of Hungary from 1765 to 1780, is shown here in the full splendor of his military rank, with a proud and determined expression on his face. Accompanying the Archduke are two important figures of the Hungarian court: the royal herald and the bishop. The herald, dressed in his traditional attire complete with a long, flowing robe and a tall, conical hat, stands to the Archduke's right, holding a large, ornate shield bearing the coat of arms of Hungary. The bishop, dressed in his ecclesiastical robes and holding a pastoral staff, stands to the Archduke's left. The intricate details of the Archduke's hussar uniform are on full display in this illustration. The green jacket, adorned with gold braid and silver buttons, is worn over a white shirt and red waistcoat. The hussar's distinctive fur busby, with its plume of white ostrich feathers, sits atop his head, while his sword hangs at his side. The overall effect is one of grandeur and power, capturing the essence of the 18th century Hungarian court. This beautiful and historically significant illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and culture of the past, offering a window into the world of the Archduke and his court. The skillful use of handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a true work of art that is as visually appealing today as it was over 170 years ago.
