EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1792, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Classical architecture. The image showcases the six principal architectural orders: the Original, Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Roman or Composite styles. The Original order, depicted at the center, represents the simplest and most ancient form of Greek architecture. It is characterized by its plain, unadorned capitals and columns. To the left of the Original order stands the Tuscan order, which shares many similarities with the Doric order but features a more prominent base and a simple, bell-shaped capital. Moving to the right, the Doric order is distinguished by its tall, fluted columns and the distinctive volutes, or scrolls, on its capital. The Ionic order, shown next, is characterized by its slender, elegant columns and the distinctive vase-shaped capital, adorned with scrolls and acanthus leaves. The Corinthian order, located at the far right, is the most ornate and elaborate of the six orders. Its capital is adorned with intricate carvings of acanthus leaves, rosettes, and other decorative elements. The Roman or Composite order, represented by the column at the very right, is a fusion of the Ionic and Corinthian orders, combining their most striking features. This engraving serves as an essential educational tool, providing a visual guide to the various Classical architectural orders and their unique characteristics. It offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history of Greek and Roman architecture, making it an invaluable resource for students, architects, and anyone with an interest in the classical world.
