EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria, also known as Ludwig the Bavarian or Ludwig the Strict, and his wife Ludmilla, dressed in the elaborate costumes of the 13th century. The Duke is shown wearing a long, flowing tunic with a fur-trimmed mantle, a helmet adorned with feathers, and carrying a sword, flag, and lance. His regal attire signifies his status as a powerful ruler and grand master of the Teutonic Knights. Duke Ludwig I, born around 1227, came to power in 1253 after the death of his father, Otto II the Peaceful. He is best known for his military campaigns against the Bohemian and Czech forces, as well as his efforts to strengthen the power of the Bavarian ducal house. The wooden statues of the Duke and his wife, displayed in the Seligenthal monastery in Landshut, served as the inspiration for this detailed and accurate representation of their costumes. The illustration was created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. Hefner-Alteneck meticulously researched and documented historical costumes and artifacts from the Middle Ages through the 17th century, producing high-quality illustrations that remain valuable resources for scholars and enthusiasts today. This image offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the medieval court, transporting us back in time to an era of chivalry, knights, and noble rulers.
