EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, a copperplate engraving by Tommaso Piroli from his Antiquities of Herculaneum (Antichità di Ercolano), published in Rome in 1789, depicts the mythological tale of Diana, the goddess of the moon, being led by Amore (Cupid) to fall in love with the sleeping shepherd Endymion. In Greek and Roman mythology, Endymion was said to be the most beautiful mortal man, and Diana, enchanted by his beauty, granted him the gift of eternal youth and immortality, allowing him to sleep forever. The scene unfolds as Diana, clad in a flowing robe and adorned with a crescent moon on her forehead, lies in a tranquil glade, her serene expression betraying her deep infatuation. Amore, the mischievous god of love, playfully nudges her with his arrow, symbolizing the power of love and desire. The goddess, seemingly oblivious to her surroundings, reaches out with one hand, as if in a dream, towards Endymion, who lies peacefully on a bed of flowers. The engraving, reminiscent of the classical frescoes found in Pompeii and Herculaneum, showcases the intricate details and delicate shading that were characteristic of the copperplate engraving technique. The artist, Tommaso Piroli, masterfully captures the ethereal beauty of the scene, transporting the viewer to a world of mythology and romance.
