EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white portrait captures Eve Curie, the renowned French writer and journalist, during her time in London during the tumultuous year of 1940. Eve, the daughter of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie, was an accomplished author and a passionate supporter of the Free French movement. With the outbreak of World War II, she left her home in Paris to report on the activities of General Charles de Gaulle and his followers for the French newspaper, Combat. The image shows Eve in her early forties, with a determined expression in her eyes and a serious look on her face. She is dressed in a simple yet elegant blouse and skirt, with a scarf loosely tied around her neck, adding a touch of sophistication to her outfit. The background is blurred, drawing the focus to Eve's face and her intense gaze. London during the Second World War was a hub of activity for the French Resistance, and Eve was at the heart of it all. She reported on the daily happenings of the Free French movement, interviewing key figures and documenting their efforts to fight against the Nazi occupation of France. Her writings were a source of hope and inspiration for the French people, both in France and in exile. This photograph is a testament to Eve Curie's courage and dedication during a time of great uncertainty and upheaval. It captures the spirit of a woman who put her talents and her passion to use in the service of her country and her people, and who played a vital role in keeping the flame of French resistance alive during the darkest days of the war.
