EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking hand-colored lithograph depicts members of the Garde de la Prevote de Paris, or the Provost's Guard of Paris, in the late 16th century. The Garde de la Prevote was a prestigious bodyguard unit established by King Henry III of France in 1573 to maintain order and security within the city. The guards were responsible for protecting the king, the royal palace, and other important buildings and sites in Paris. In this image, we see a group of soldiers standing at attention, each dressed in the distinctive uniform of the Garde de la Prevote. They wear tall, conical helmets adorned with plumes, breastplates, and long, flowing doublets. Some carry halberds, while others wield muskets or swords. The intricate detail of their uniforms, from the intricate lacing on their doublets to the ornate designs on their helmets, is beautifully rendered in the lithograph. The image is based on a portrait in the gallery portfolio of Roger de Gaignières, which was published in Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852. The portrait was drawn and lithographed by Alexandre Massard, a renowned French artist and illustrator of the time. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of richness and depth to the image, bringing the guards to life and transporting us back to the courts of the French monarchy in the late 16th century.
