EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Taenia asiatica, also known as the Human Tapeworm. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The Human Tapeworm is a parasitic flatworm that can infect humans through the consumption of undercooked or raw fish contaminated with the parasite's larvae. In this illustration, the tapeworm is shown in cross-section, revealing its segmented structure and the presence of both the scolex, or head, and the proglottids, or reproductive segments. The image is accompanied by several labeled fish species, including the Grunt (Pomadasys), Squirrelfish (Holocentrus ascensionis), and the Pristipomoides furcatus, also known as the Sogo or Pike Squirrelfish. These fish are likely indicated as potential hosts for the tapeworm. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his meticulous attention to detail is evident in this intricately engraved and hand-colored plate. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of small dots to create shading and texture, adds depth and dimension to the illustration. Overall, this beautiful and informative image offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of parasitic worms and the role that fish play in their life cycle.
