EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella Stewart, Duchess of Brittany (1426-1499), is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard. The Duchess, also known as Isabelle Stuart or Isabel, was the wife of Francis I, Duke of Brittany, Earl of Richmond, and a significant figure in Scottish and Breton history. Born in Scotland, Isabella was the daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan, and Joan Beaufort, daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. In 1450, she married Francis I, Duke of Brittany, a union that strengthened the ties between Scotland and Brittany. In this portrait, Isabella is shown wearing an elegant surcot coat of arms adorned with ermine, a symbol of royalty and nobility. The intricate detailing of the coat, as well as the rich fabric of her dress, speaks to the opulence and grandeur of the Duchess's court. Isabella's portrait is taken from a miniature in Roger de Gaignieres portfolio VI 36, which was published as part of the renowned "Historical Costumes of France" series by Paul Lacroix in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail in this lithograph allows us to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of Isabella's attire, as well as the elegance and grace of the Duchess herself. Isabella Stewart, Duchess of Brittany, was a woman of great influence and power during the late Middle Ages. Her marriage to Francis I strengthened the ties between Scotland and Brittany, and her court was known for its sophistication and refinement. This portrait serves as a reminder of her important role in history and the enduring beauty of the artistic traditions of the time.
