This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's "Book of the World" published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases a fascinating assembly of four distinct and intriguing mammalian species: a Meerkat (Suricata suricatta), an Indian Grey Mongoose (Herpestes edwardsii), a Common Kusimanse (Crossarchus obscurus), and an Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). The Meerkat, depicted in the foreground, is a social and diurnal mammal native to the arid regions of Southern Africa. Known for their distinctive upright posture and long, slender snouts, Meerkats are skilled burrowers and are well-adapted to their desert environment. Next to the Meerkat, the Indian Grey Mongoose can be seen. This species, native to South Asia, is a versatile and opportunistic predator, known for its agility and adaptability.
