This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving by George Cruikshank depicts a pivotal moment in the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, the legendary French military and political leader. The image, taken from 'The Life of Napoleon a Hudibrastic Poem' by Doctor Syntax, published in London in 1815 by T. Tegg, captures the moment of Napoleon's abdication. In the foreground, Napoleon, dressed in a red military jacket and trousers, is seen with his hands raised in surrender as Marshal Michel Ney, one of his most trusted generals, points pistols at his head.
