EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals published in 1836, showcases three distinctive breeds of Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog: the Pointer, Dachshund, and Basset Hound. The Pointer, Canis avicularius, is a versatile gun dog breed, renowned for its exceptional pointing abilities. With a sleek, muscular build and distinctive upright ears, this breed was bred to locate game birds and alert hunters to their presence. Its keen sense of smell and keen eyesight make it an invaluable companion in the field. The Dachshund, Canis vertagus, is a small, long-bodied breed, known for its distinctive "wiener dog" shape. Originating in Germany, Dachshunds were bred for hunting badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. Their elongated bodies and short legs enable them to navigate tight spaces and effectively chase their quarry into their burrows. The Basset Hound, also known as the Basset Artésien Normand, is a short-legged hound breed, with a long body and drooping ears. Developed in France, Basset Hounds were bred for hunting hare and other small game. Their excellent sense of smell and distinctive bark make them excellent tracking dogs. This stunning lithograph not only showcases the unique physical characteristics of these breeds but also highlights their rich history and the important roles they played in hunting and companionship. A must-have for any dog lover or zoologist's collection, this print is a testament to the diversity and versatility of the domestic dog.
