EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1844, showcases three iconic structures from Italy's rich architectural history: St. Mark's Campanile in Venice (1), the Two Towers of Bologna, Asinelli and Garisenda (2, 3), and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (4). The St. Mark's Campanile, located in Venice, is a freestanding bell tower that once served as the bell tower for St. Mark's Basilica. The tower, rebuilt in the 16th century after a devastating collapse, stands proudly behind the Doge's Palace and the iconic St. Mark's Square. In Bologna, the Two Towers of Asinelli and Garisenda are a testament to the city's medieval past. The taller Asinelli Tower, with its distinctive spiral staircase, has been a symbol of the city since the 12th century. Its leaner sister, Garisenda, was built around the same time but has since leaned precariously due to the soft ground beneath it. Lastly, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, located in the city of the same name, is perhaps the most famous of the three structures. Constructed between 1173 and 1372, the tower began to lean during its construction due to the soft ground beneath it. Despite the lean, it remains a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Italian ingenuity. This beautiful engraving, produced by Andrea Bernieri, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the architectural wonders of Italy during the 1800s. The detailed illustration, with its rich colours and intricate lines, invites us to explore the history and culture of these iconic structures and the cities they call home.
