EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases four exquisite species of Neotropical butterflies: the Tree-nymph, Idea lynceus (Idaea lyncea), the Large Smoky Acraea, Acraea camaena, and the Glasswing, Ithomia drymo (Heliconia diaphana). The Tree-nymph, also known as the Blue-spotted Tree-nymph, is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of approximately 7.5 centimeters. Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of blue, green, and white, with a striking black border. The Large Smoky Acraea, on the other hand, is a much larger butterfly, with a wingspan of up to 12 centimeters. Its wings are predominantly brown with smoky gray markings, giving it a distinctive and camouflaged appearance. The Glasswing, or the Blue-eyed Glasswing, is a small butterfly with a wingspan of around 5 centimeters. It is named for its transparent wings, which are almost invisible when the butterfly is at rest. The wings of the Glasswing are also adorned with iridescent blue spots on the edges. This stunning lithograph not only showcases the beauty of these butterflies but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the Neotropical region during the 19th century. The meticulous attention to detail in the handcolouring highlights the intricacies of the butterflies' wings and adds to the overall allure of this image.
