EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a breathtaking view of the Besiktas Sahil Palace, a vacation residence of the Ottoman Sultans located on the European side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul during the 1800s. The serene waters of the Bosphorus reflect the grandeur of the palace, with the Sultan and his harem entourage sailing in ornate barges, protected by eunuchs. The palace, also known as Casa di Villeggiatura del Sultano or the Sultan's Country House, was a popular retreat for the Sultans to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The scene is filled with a sense of tranquility and leisure, as the Sultan and his court engage in various martial arts and games, such as tomak, a traditional Ottoman sport played with wool balls and strips of leather. The watch officers and pages are also seen engaged in military exercises, ensuring that the palace was always prepared for any potential threats. The engraving, created by Verico after Giulio Ferrario, is an exquisite example of historical illustration from Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1842. The intricate details of the clothing and accessories worn by the figures in the scene, as well as the architectural features of the palace, offer a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Ottoman Empire during this period. The use of handcolouring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image, making it a valuable historical document and an intriguing work of art.
