EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases exquisite wall paintings discovered in various houses in Pompeii, a city preserved by the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The image on the left depicts a candelabra from the Casa del Panettiere, or House of the Baker, located at VII.III.30. The intricate design of the candelabra, with its delicate leaves and fruit, is a testament to the advanced artistic skills of the Pompeian artisans. Adorning the top of the next wall painting is a frieze from the House of Caecilius Iucundus, situated at V.I.26. The frieze is adorned with intricate arabesques and griffins, mythical creatures with the body, tail, and head of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle. These fierce creatures were believed to guard against evil and bring good fortune. The arabesques with griffins, displayed on the wall of the Casa dei Dioscuri, or House of Castor and Pollux, at VI.IX.6, are a stunning example of Pompeian fresco art. The delicate intertwining patterns and the graceful curves of the griffins create a mesmerizing visual effect. Lastly, the ornament from the House of Apollo, located at VI.VII.23, is a beautiful representation of the intricate detail and vibrant colors that characterized Pompeian wall paintings. The delicate floral motifs and the playful use of color create a harmonious and visually appealing design. This chromolithograph, produced by Victor Steeger after an illustration by Geremia Discanno for Emile Presuhns' Les Plus Belles Peintures de Pompei, offers a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of Pompeii and the extraordinary talent of its ancient artists.
