EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, His Royal Highness Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI, is seen performing the dignified act of unveiling the War Memorial Arch at Guys Hospital in London, during a ceremony held in July 1921. The Duke, who was the sixth in line to the British throne at the time, was greeted by a large crowd as he arrived at the hospital to pay tribute to those who had served and sacrificed their lives during the First World War. The War Memorial Arch, a grand and imposing structure, stands proudly in the background, adorned with the names of the fallen soldiers from Guys Hospital. The Duke's presence added a sense of solemnity and importance to the occasion, as he paid his respects to the memory of those who had given their lives for their country. But the Duke's visit to Guys Hospital was not just a somber occasion. He also took the opportunity to open a new building for massage treatment, which was equipped with the most modern facilities. Massage therapy was a relatively new addition to the medical world at the time, and the Duke's support for this innovative approach to healthcare was a significant endorsement. The photograph captures a moment of history, as the Duke of York, future King George VI, pays tribute to the fallen heroes of the war and looks forward to the future of medical care at Guys Hospital. The image is a poignant reminder of the role that the British monarchy played in the nation's history, and the enduring importance of healthcare and remembrance.
