EDITORS COMMENTS
This extremely rare dinner menu dates back to September 25, 1916, aboard the HMHS Britannic, the ill-fated sister ship of the RMS Titanic. During World War I, the Britannic served as a hospital ship for the British military, transporting wounded soldiers from the Mediterranean to England. The menu, featuring the White Star Line's iconic red star logo, offers a glimpse into the gourmet meals served on board, providing a stark contrast to the chaos and destruction of the war raging outside. The Britannic, which was the largest ship lost during WWI, sank on November 21, 1916, after hitting a German mine near the Greek island of Kea. The ship took less than an hour to sink, resulting in the loss of over 1,000 lives. This tragic event occurred under eight weeks after the menu was used for a dinner service. The menu's items include an appetizer of Consommé Olga, followed by a choice of Roast Squab or Filet de Bœuf à la Chasseur for the main course. The dessert selection included Peach Melba and Strawberries and Cream. The catering staff took great care in preparing these meals, ensuring that the soldiers received nutritious and delicious food during their journey. This unique piece of history is a poignant reminder of the contrasting experiences of luxury and hardship during the tumultuous 1910s. The HMHS Britannic's dinner menu is an invaluable artifact that offers a glimpse into the past, providing a connection to a time when the world was forever changed by the events of World War I.
