HMS Courageous

Royal Navy - HMS Courageous (pennant number 50'), in August 1938. HMS Courageous was the lead ship of her class of three battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy during the First World War. Designed to support the Baltic Project championed by First Sea Lord John Fisher, the ship was very lightly armoured and armed with only a few heavy guns. Courageous was completed in late 1916 and spent the war patrolling the North Sea. She participated in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in November 1917 and was present when the German High Seas Fleet surrendered a year later. Courageous was decommissioned after the war, then rebuilt as an aircraft carrier during the mid-1920s. She could carry 48 aircraft compared to the 36 carried by her half-sister Furious on approximately the same displacement. After recommissioning she spent most of her career operating off Great Britain and Ireland. She briefly became a training ship, but reverted to her normal role a few months before the start of the Second World War in September 1939. Courageous was torpedoed and sunk by U-29 on17 September 1939, going down with more than 500 of her crew. Date: 1938

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic HMS Courageous, a Royal Navy battlecruiser with a rich history dating back to World War I. Commissioned in late 1916, she played a crucial role in patrolling the North Sea and engaging in battles such as the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight. After being decommissioned post-war, Courageous was rebuilt as an aircraft carrier with enhanced capabilities, able to carry 48 aircraft compared to her sister ship Furious. In August 1938, this photograph showcases HMS Courageous in all her glory, showcasing her powerful presence on the seas. The ship's sleek design and formidable armament are evident, reflecting her importance in naval operations during this time period. Tragically, just over a year later in September 1939, HMS Courageous met its untimely end when it was torpedoed and sunk by U-29 with over 500 crew members lost at sea. Despite this devastating loss, the legacy of HMS Courageous lives on through images like these that capture her strength and significance in naval history. This print is not just a visual representation of a historic vessel but also serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served aboard her.
