EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Lesueur in 1840, offers a glimpse into the administrative inner workings of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century. The image depicts a grand assembly of high-ranking officials, including the Grand Vizier, Kaim-Mekam, flanked by Reis Efendi and Khadjedhian, a member of the Divan. The Grand Vizier, an essential figure in the Ottoman government, is shown wearing the traditional conical hat, known as a kalpak, and a long, flowing robe adorned with intricate patterns. His beard, a symbol of wisdom and power, is carefully groomed and neatly trimmed. The Reis Efendi, a high-ranking judge, is also bearded and wears a turban, while Khadjedhian, a member of the Divan, the highest legislative and consultative body of the Ottoman Empire, dons a similar robe but with a different headdress, possibly a fez. The men in this image are not only political figures but also embodiments of the Ottoman customs and traditions. Their clothing and headdresses reflect the unique cultural identity of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled vast territories from the Balkans to the Middle East between the 13th and 20th centuries. The assembly, held in the Divan, was a critical forum for the discussion and implementation of political and administrative matters, making this image a significant historical document of the Ottoman Empire's administrative structure and political landscape.
