EDITORS COMMENTS
This extraordinary vintage poster, dating back to 1893, showcases an intriguing and little-known chapter in the annals of both aviation and sports history. The image captures the electrifying scene of a horse race unlike any other, held at the Hippodrome du Trotting Club Levallois in Paris. The participants in this unique competition are none other than the renowned Wild West performer Samuel Cody on horseback and the French cycling champion, Meyer of Dieppe, on a bicycle. Samuel Cody, a British-born sharpshooter and famous cowboy, had made a name for himself in Europe with his Wild West shows. In an attempt to attract larger crowds and generate excitement, Cody engaged in a daring race against the French cycling champion. The event, organized by Emile Levy & Cie, was published in Paris and measures an impressive 50 inches by 37 inches. The poster's design is a visual feast, with Cody wearing his signature cowboy hat and holding a horseshoe, while Meyer, dressed in cycling attire, pedals determinedly. The horseshoe serves as an interesting foreshadowing of Cody's future achievements in aviation. Cody would go on to become one of the earliest aviation pioneers, making history as the first person to fly a powered aircraft in the UK, in 1908. This rare and captivating poster is a testament to the interconnected worlds of early sports and aviation, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past. It is a must-have for collectors of vintage posters, early aviation memorabilia, and those with an interest in the history of both sports and entertainment.
