EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of camaraderie and determination among the French N124 Escadrille Lafayette, a squadron of French-commanded American volunteer pilots during World War I. Formed in April 1916, this elite unit was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French hero who had supported the American Revolution. The squadron's distinctive Indian Head emblem, painted on the side of the nearest Nieuport 17 biplane, can be seen clearly in this image. The Nieuport 17 was a popular and effective fighter plane of the time, and the Escadrille Lafayette pilots were among the best in the sky. In February 1918, the squadron was transferred to US control and became the 103rd Aero Squadron. The pilots continued to fly their Nieuport 17s with great success, contributing significantly to the Allied war effort. This photograph captures the pilots and their planes on the ground, likely preparing for a mission. The scene is one of focused intensity, with the pilots checking their machines and discussing tactics. The Nieuport 17s, with their distinctive biplane design and bright red and blue insignia, stand out against the drab backdrop of the military camp. The history of the Escadrille Lafayette and its American volunteers is a fascinating chapter in the annals of aviation history. This photograph is a testament to their bravery, skill, and dedication to the cause of freedom and democracy during the First World War.
