The image captures a moment of anticipation and grandeur, as the group gathers in the ornate surroundings of the historic venue. On the extreme left of the photograph stands Viscount Lascelles, the elder son of the Princess Royal, who was one of the King's train-bearers. In the group to the left center, we find the Duke of Buccleuch, the Lord Steward, responsible for the household management of the monarch; Field-Marshal Lord Milne, bearer of the Second Sword; the Earl of Cromer, the Lord Chamberlain, who oversaw the royal household and ceremonial events; and the Duchess of Norfolk, who served as canopy bearer to the Queen. The two ecclesiastics in the center of the photograph are the Archbishop of York and the Bishop of London, who held the paten during the coronation ceremony. On the right foreground, we see the Duke of Abercorn, one of the four Knights of the Garter appointed to hold the canopy for the King's Anointing; the Earl of Lytton, another canopy-bearer; Major Algar H.S. Howard, Norroy King of Arms, responsible for maintaining the royal heraldry; and Lord Hailsham, the Lord Chancellor, who was the principal legal advisor to the monarch. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich tapestry of the 1937 Coronation, with its grand procession of notables, each playing a vital role in the ceremony and the functioning of the monarchy.
