EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Gaspar de Olivares, Count-Duke of Olivares (1587-1645), a prominent Spanish statesman and court favorite of King Philip IV (1622-1643). Olivares, a native of Seville, rose to power in the early 17th century and became one of the most influential figures in Spanish politics during the reign of Philip IV. He was known for his ambitious policies and reforms, which aimed to modernize the Spanish monarchy and strengthen its position in Europe. Olivares' tenure as the king's chief advisor began in 1622, and he quickly implemented a series of reforms designed to centralize power and improve the efficiency of the Spanish administration. He also sought to promote economic development and expand Spain's influence abroad, particularly in Italy and the Americas. Despite his many accomplishments, Olivares' policies were controversial and met with resistance from various quarters, including the nobility and the Church. His efforts to impose new taxes and reform the military were particularly unpopular, and he faced numerous challenges to his authority. This engraving, which dates from the early modern period, captures the image of a confident and determined Olivares, dressed in the robes of a count-duke. The inscription at the bottom identifies him as "Gaspar de Olivares, Count-Duke of Olivares, Spanish statesman, court favorite of Philip IV (1622-1643)." The image is part of the vast collection of historical prints and documents housed in the National Library of Madrid, a testament to Spain's rich cultural heritage and its complex and storied history.
