EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a print of Oncifelis colocolo, also known as the pampas cat or the Chilean cat, taken from Plate 9 of The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, Vol 1, Part 2 Mammalia, published in 1838-1839. The illustration was produced during the historic journey led by H.M.S. Beagle, under the command of Captain FitzRoy, and was prepared under the direction of the renowned naturalist, Charles Darwin. The pampas cat is a native of South America, specifically found in the pampas grasslands of Argentina and Chile. It is a small feline, belonging to the Felidae family, with a distinctively spotted coat that provides excellent camouflage in its grassland habitat. This carnivorous mammal is a member of the Feloidea suborder, Feliformia order, Felinae subfamily, and Felidae family. Its scientific name, Leopardus colocolo, reflects its close relationship to other members of the Felidae family, such as the leopard and the jaguar. At the time of this illustration, the pampas cat was relatively unknown to the scientific community, and its discovery represented an important addition to the understanding of the diverse range of mammals in the Americas. Today, the pampas cat is considered an endangered species, with populations declining due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and human persecution. This beautiful and intriguing creature serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and continuing the spirit of discovery and exploration that characterized the voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle.
