EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in English history as King Richard II (1367-1400) and his council descend the River Thames in a grand barge to confer with the rebels during the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The Peasants' Revolt, also known as the Wat Tyler's Rebellion, was a widespread uprising of peasants and laborers against the oppressive feudal system and heavy taxation. King Richard II, who had only recently come to the throne at the age of 14, was caught off guard by the rebellion. In an attempt to quell the unrest, he agreed to meet with the rebels' leaders, including the charismatic Wat Tyler, at Smithfield in London. The meeting took place on June 15, 1381, and was held aboard the royal barge, the Grace Dieu, as it floated in the Thames. In this photograph, we see the king and his councilors, dressed in their finest robes and regalia, making their way down the river towards the rebel-held castle at Smithfield. The image conveys a sense of tension and uncertainty, as the fate of the kingdom hangs in the balance. The towering castle in the background looms ominously, a reminder of the power struggle that lies ahead. This historic event marked a turning point in English history, as the rebellion ultimately failed, and the feudal system remained in place for another century. However, the Peasants' Revolt highlighted the deep-seated grievances of the common people and paved the way for future reforms. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a unique glimpse into the past and provides a fascinating insight into the political and social upheavals of medieval England.
