EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Patriotic Shrine at Paiyushan Hill in Lushun City, Liaoning Province, China, circa 1910. The scene commemorates the end of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), when the Russians surrendered Port Arthur to the Japanese after a grueling year-long siege. The victory came at a great cost to both sides, with approximately 58,000 casualties for the Japanese. The image shows the hilltop shrine, adorned with torii gates and flanked by towering guns. The hill, now a symbol of Japanese triumph, was once the site of intense battle. The hilltop shrine, dedicated to the fallen soldiers and the victory, stands proudly against the backdrop of the harbor. The Torii gates, traditional Japanese gateways marking the threshold between the secular world and the sacred, add a sense of reverence and solemnity to the scene. The shrine serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the enduring bond between the people and their history. The hill, formerly known as Paiyushan, was also referred to as Ryojun or Port Arthur. The name change reflects the shifting political landscape of the region, as China, Russia, and Japan vied for control over the strategic port city. Today, the Patriotic Shrine remains a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the world who seek to pay their respects and learn about the rich history of this fascinating region.
