EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Her Majesty's Australian Ship (HMAS) Melbourne (21) making its way into port with an impressive complement of Douglas A-4G Skyhawks from 805 Squadron RAN and Westland Sea King Mk.50s from 817 Squadron RAN in tow. HMAS Melbourne (R21), a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier, served the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) from 1955 to 1982. The vessel was originally ordered in 1943 and built by Vickers-Armstrongs in Barrow-in-Furness, England. Launched as HMS Majestic in 1945, she was later christened HMAS Melbourne and commissioned into the RAN on October 28, 1955. The ship's motto, "Vires Acquirit Eundo," which means "She Gathers Strength As She Goes," aptly describes the Melbourne's service history. During its tenure, HMAS Melbourne earned battle honours for its role in the Malaysia conflict in 1965-66, in addition to two inherited honours. The ship was decommissioned in 1982 and eventually sold for scrap in the 1970s. In this image, the Melbourne proudly displays its aircraft complement as it approaches the safety of the harbor, a testament to its enduring strength and capabilities.
