EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Royal Air Force (RAF) de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FB Mk.XVIII (registration number PZ467, nicknamed "Tse-Tse"), armed with an impressive 57mm (6 pounder) Molins quick-firing gun. The first Mk.XVIII Mosquito was flown on August 25, 1943, and twenty-seven of these formidable aircraft were built for the RAF. The Tse-Tses, as they were affectionately known, saw action from November 1943. One notable success came on March 25, 1944, when at least one U-boat was destroyed by the Mosquito's cannon. However, structural issues due to the intense recoil from the gun limited their effectiveness, and they eventually lost favor with the advent of RP-3 rockets (60-lb er). This aeronautical marvel, a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the time, represents a significant chapter in the history of aviation and military transportation. Circa 1944.
