EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful handcolored illustration, titled "Pink Button Rose and Double Provence Rose," is taken from Charles Malos' Histoire des Roses, published in Paris in 1818. The illustration was created through the intricate process of stipple engraving by Teillard, with handcoloring by Pancrace Bessa. The Pink Button Rose, also known as Rosa pomponia, is depicted on the left side of the illustration. This old garden rose is characterized by its small, button-like buds that open into delicate, pink flowers with a slight fragrance. The Pink Button Rose was popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries and is still grown today for its charming appearance and nostalgic appeal. On the right side of the illustration, the Double Provence Rose, or Rosa provincialis, is depicted in all its glory. This rose variety is known for its double blooms, which feature numerous petals that create a full, fluffy appearance. The Double Provence Rose was also widely cultivated during the 18th and 19th centuries and is still admired for its beauty and ability to produce abundant, fragrant flowers throughout the growing season. This botanical illustration provides a glimpse into the rich history of roses, showcasing two beloved varieties that have captivated gardeners and flower enthusiasts for centuries. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the handcoloring bring the roses to life, making this a beautiful addition to any botanical collection or garden-themed decor.
