EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard commemorates the historic moment of Argentina's declaration of independence on May 25, 1810. The image, dating from the centenary of the revolution in 1910, portrays the national heroes of Argentina gathered in the Cabildo de Buenos Aires, the city's town hall. Among them are some of the most prominent figures of the Argentine Revolution, including General José de San Martín, who led the Argentine forces to victory in the South American Wars of Independence, and General José de San Martín, who is depicted personifying Argentina as a woman, symbolizing the country's newfound freedom and pride. Other notable figures in the scene include General Manuel Belgrano, who raised the Argentine flag for the first time in 1812; General Manuel José de Escobar, who led the defense of Buenos Aires during the British invasion in 1806; General Juan Lavalle, a key figure in the Argentine Revolution; and General José de Urquiza, who played a crucial role in the final stages of the war. The postcard also features portraits of other important Argentine leaders, such as General Juan Manuel de Rosas, who ruled as both governor and supreme director of Argentina from 1829 to 1852; General Justo José de Urquiza, who led the forces of the Confederation of the Argentine Nations to victory against Rosas in the Battle of Arroyo Grande; and General Bartolomé Mitre, who served as president of Argentina from 1862 to 1866 and played a significant role in the modernization of the country. This poignant image captures the spirit of Argentine nationalism and the deep sense of pride and patriotism that continues to define the country today. The names of the heroes inscribed on the postcard serve as a reminder of the sacrifices and achievements of those who fought for Argentina's independence and laid the foundation for its rich and complex history.
